LEED and SPiRiT Projects

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings' performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

The SPiRiT program was originally developed to provide guidance to support the consideration of sustainable design and development principles in Army installation planning decisions and infrastructure projects. Its intent was that it would be used throughout the design process to guide the project towards a sustainable solution as well as to score and rate the resulting facility. SPiRiT was modeled after the LEED Rating System.

The Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center was one of the first LEED Certified buildings in Maine Schair-Swenson-Watson-Alumni Center, Colby College, Waterville, Maine

W.H. Demmons teamed with Ian MacDonald of Allied Engineering and Reed & Reed in 2003 to design and build the Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center on the campus of Colby College. AchievingLEED Silver Certification on this 30,000 ft2 building was a very high honor for everyone involved in this project. LEED certifications are issued for four levels: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
The fact that the project achieved silver certified status is a huge success, not only for Colby College, but also for the State of Maine. The Alumni Center is one of the first LEED Certified buildings in the state, a stepping stone for the future of building construction in Maine.
